If you're a woman considering beta-alanine, the smartest expectation is narrower and more realistic than the usual marketing pitch: think better tolerance for hard efforts, not a universal performance upgrade.

In a performance stack, beta-alanine makes the most sense when your training includes repeated high-intensity work or sustained efforts that end because of burning fatigue. It's less compelling as a body-composition supplement or as a shortcut to higher VO2max.

What they did

This was a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials testing beta-alanine supplementation in women against placebo or control. The authors searched PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and Embase through April 30, 2026, following PRISMA 2020 and a preregistered PROSPERO protocol.

Eleven independent trials contributed 12 reports, for a total of 312 women. The included outcomes were time to exhaustion, maximal or peak oxygen uptake, peak power, anaerobic performance, and body fat percentage.

The authors assessed trial quality with RoB 2 and rated certainty with GRADE. They pooled results with random-effects meta-analysis using standardized mean differences and 95% confidence intervals.

What they found

Across 8 studies including 187 women, beta-alanine improved time to exhaustion versus control, with a standardized mean difference of 0.49 (95% CI 0.20 to 0.79; p = 0.001). Statistical heterogeneity for this outcome was low at I2 = 0%.

For peak power, anaerobic performance, VO2max or VO2peak, and body fat percentage, the pooled estimates were imprecise. Their 95% confidence intervals crossed trivial effects and, where relevant, could not rule in or out meaningful benefit.

Overall, the pattern was outcome-specific: the clearest pooled signal was for lasting longer before fatigue, while the other measured performance and body-composition outcomes did not show a reliable combined effect.

What this means if you take it

Use beta-alanine for the kind of training where lasting a bit longer before fatigue actually matters — hard intervals, conditioning pieces, circuits, and events with a strong acidosis component. If your goal is explosiveness alone, this paper gives less reason to expect much.

Judge it by training performance, not hype. The most relevant question is whether you can sustain work slightly longer or get more quality done before fading, rather than whether your scale weight, body fat, or top-end power suddenly jump.
